In transforming the two-dimensional US flag to a “fully dimensional object,” Klecka created parallel bands joined by stars. “One of my signatures is the use of negative space as an integral component of my jewelry,” he says. “Each star connects three stripes—and their random placement around the ring creates the illusion that the bands are suspended without connections.” Like the invisible bonds that unite us as citizens, the stars join the stripes together to create a harmonious symbol for what many now see as a divided nation. THE FUTURE An open question remains what happens to this remarkable collection down the road. As long- time members retire or move on, and, presumably, younger artists are invited to take their place, will the hundreds of works that make up the AJDC collection gradually disperse and make their way into other hands? Or will this assembly of masterpieces of contemporary jewelry remain together and find a permanent home in a museum or other institution, where it can be viewed by the public and studied by scholars, historians, and future generations of aspiring artists? We can only hope for the latter outcome. In the meantime, however, we can enjoy the stunning selection gathered here.
