WAVE Jane Bohan During my annual trip to the Tucson gem show in 2013 I had in the back of my mind to look for a stone that could give me an idea for my AJDC project piece. When I discovered the sea foam chalcedony stone cut in a cabochon marquis shape I was reminded of the ocean, waves and surfing. My WAVE project now had the inspiration and concept for me to begin designing. My design process typically begins with a textured surface that has sparked my imagination and I create a motif that will help to define a new collection of jewelry, be the catalyst for a new design direction, or inspire a one-of-a-kind piece. Both of these elements came together in the creation of the Surfboard brooch. I was first attracted to the chalcedony’s color because it reminded me of the sea. My place for relaxation and rejuvenation has always been near the ocean, particularly at my beach home in Fire Island, NY. After a recent trip to Spain and seeing the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, I became so enamored by his organic forms and rich textures that I was inspired to create my Barcelona collection. The motif that encloses the marquis chalcedony was inspired by the pattern on the gate at his Casa Mila apartment building (above). 80
