ICE Making a piece of jewelry based on a theme is always a challenge. Since the point of the project is to enter into new territory, both technically and in design, this presented an additional hurdle.   In this case, I at least had the advantage of coming from a place, mid-coast Maine, where the topic is one with which I am well acquainted. I chose the ruffle formation as it is one of the most elemental movements inherent in nature.  This suggested to me the movement of ice in the spring as the sheets break apart transitioning into swirling ice floes. The ruffle involves the extreme unraveling of a tightly anticlasted coil formed from a tapered strip of sheet metal. It was subsequently formed into a spiral suggesting a turbulent moving surface of ice and water; the patinas mimicking the hues of an Arctic plain. The beautiful center pearl adds a literal representation of life in water, and adds a classic jewelry element to a piece that can be worn as a brooch or as a pendant.  The piece is intended to invoke a hidden warmth despite the coolness of the theme.
